Here are fifteen exquisite designs, uniquely styled after traditional Japanese Kake-Jiku--beautiful hanging scrolls that grace the alcoves and entryways of Japanese homes. Created in kimono silks as well as contemporary cottons, each block features needleturn applique. Many include three-dimensional flowers or elegant sashiko stitching. Others introduce simple Japanese knots and cording. Kumiko's delightful watercolor drawings serve as a charming complement to this gorgeous collection.
Choose a simple applique design like this one. The fabrics are layered upon each other for a textured, dimensional effect. The stems are embroidered directly onto the background and applique fabrics.
Three dimensional dragonflies alight on this otherwise simple fan design. You can use the dragonfly for many other projects. Add a pin at the back for an instant brooch, clip it to a headband, or stitch it onto a purse as a pretty design detail.
While this is one of the more challenging designs that requires careful fabric choices, it is easier than it looks. The large appliques make it easy to cut and sew. The sashiko stitching onto the background fabric adds wonderful extra texture. Use a design like this to create a peaceful little corner in your home, as shown here.
In Flower Origami, Kumiko delights with twenty designs, perfect for embellishing quilts or as exquisite accents to fashion or home dec. Each is shown first on a large quilt block that makes a lovely wall hanging. Several are also photographed as fashion accessories, adding color and style to hats, totes, and more. Most flower designs are take-along projects, finished in an hour or less.
The three-dimensional flowers bring a welcome flash of color to this quilt block design.
Instead of making a quilt or wall-hanging, it's easy to take a single 16" x 16" block and transform it into a pillow slip. You can use any of the blocks in Flower Origami in this way. There are 16 different designs to choose from, all featuring fabric origami and applique.

Save time and cut with precision with Kumiko Sudo's three-sizes-in-one templates. Perfect for preparing fabric-origami starter-shapes, the pack includes templates for circles, squares, octagons, pentagons. See reverse for directions-and a free flower-origami pattern!
Each shape is easy to cut in three different sizes. Here, the outer ring of the circle is cut with a rotary blade. Use a pencil to mark either of the two smaller circles onto fabric, then use scissors to cut them out. The clear plastic allows you to see the fabric clearly before you cut so that you can get the best part of the fabric design for your project. Layer two or more fabrics for faster cutting.
Tough-to-draw shapes like the octagon become much easier using Kumiko's sturdy plastic template. Position the template over your favorite part of the fabric, then cut a perfect octagon to fold into a flower!
The pentagon is another difficult shape to draw or cut, but the template makes it easy.
